
Nicki Minaj took the spotlight at the 2011 American Music Awards, held on Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater on Sunday evening (November 20). After opening the show together with David Guetta along with performances of “Turn Me On” and “Super bass, ” the Young Money rapper continued to take home two awards. She acquired trophies for Best Rap/Hip-Hop artist and Best Rap/Hip-Hop album of the year for pink Friday. During her emotional acceptance messages, she even were able to thank both Taylor swift and Lil Wayne.
Within the category for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist, Minaj defeated Lil Wayne and Kanye West and during the woman’s acceptance speech she gave shout outs to Weezy and to a very excited Taylor Swift. “There’s so much love in this room, I wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart for this love, ” she said to the audience, adding a quick thanks to, “Taylor Swift, wherever you are.” Swift, a self-professed Nicki fan and “Super Bass” fanatic, could be seen beaming in the audience.
Minaj’s second award from the night was Best Rap/Hip-Hop album of the year, for that she beat out Ye and Jay’s Watch The Throne, and Lil Wayne’s Tha carter IV. “This one could actually make me cry, I can’t believe this is happening,” a tearful Nicki said to the audience throughout her acceptance speech “I’m gonna have to thank god and I have to thank Lil Wayne because without him I would not be here.” She additionally expressed gratitude towards the rest of the woman’s Young Money crew–Slim, Cortez Bryant and Mack Maine, before throwing a joke about her mom’s plans to place a gospel album.
