Kanye West and Russell Simmons added their weight towards the Occupy Wall Street movement, although Simmons spoke with respect to West who desired to avoid media attention. A number of emcees and Hip Hop artists have joined the movement including Immortal Technique, Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, and Brother Ali.
Simmons talked for West within an impromptu interview along with Okay Africa, who stood alongside the business magnate as well as nodded in contract, saying, “He’s here in support of the people. As an artist, he feels artistic people and he feels what they’re doing. He knows. He understands this idea about getting the money out of the government and letting the people govern. He wants to give power back to the people. That’s why we’re here.”
Occupy Wall Street is definitely an ongoing protest that has been taking place in New York City’s Zuccotti Park since September 17th and is aimed at eliminating corporate greed and economic inequality using tactics how the group itself explains as “horizontal” towards the Arab Spring uprisings. The call for the protest apparently originated from an of Adbusters magazine.
Since the movement began it has since spread to numerous cities in the US and to several protests worldwide including London, Dublin, Toronto, and numerous cities in Australia. The movement may be met with supporte from cultural critics including Cornel West, Michael Moore, and Naomi Klein in addition to drawing comments in the President and endorsements through politicians like Nancy Pelosi and Russ Feingold.
